Belmont Cinema.

BRIEF: To conduct a feasibility study for Belmont Aberdeen, a much-loved council-owned venue that closed in Autumn 2022 when the parent company went into administration. Belmont is a three-screen venue with a disused basement bar area, 2x 35mm projectors and a media and learning centre on the top floor.

Mustard developed four renovation scenarios for this study, from a basic reopening to a transformational reimagined local cinema and restaurant offer. We looked at the floor plan and the existing plant equipment. We developed options for a more welcoming and open venue with broader kerb appeal and a balanced programme portfolio, including an attractive food and beverage offer.

Additionally, we researched education and learning models from other independent venues and institutions to propose how Aberdeen could deliver a fantastic local offer that incorporated the community's needs. We spoke to several city stakeholders to fully understand how the cinema is a cultural beacon and combined it with our financial modelling to show the outlay.

Our approach was to ensure we delivered a comprehensive report that was clear for all the stakeholders plus outlining the commercial challenges for any potential landlords.

Our proposal was well received by the council and was widely acclaimed by the Save the Belmont community group as a strategy for their bid to operate the cinema.
